Engine 2 Products ?

Postby fiberdrunk » Fri Dec 10, 2021 9:05 am

I haven't been able to find Engine 2 food products at my local Whole Foods. Have they been phased out? That'd be unfortunate as it was one of the few WFPB commercial product lines out there.

Basically…..

A while back, Amazon discontinued the products from WFM

E2 hooked up with another distributor and they were selling some of the products online but the selection was very limited.

The website is expanding their offerings and some are being offered at WFM again

I still can't find them at my local WF. WF is now basically a paleo store as far as I can tell. Really disappointing and the Engine 2 hummus was the only commercial hummus I would buy b/c it didn't have oil. Sigh.

Cedar’s brand has a fat & oil free hummus.

(Though high in salt)

Jeff,
What (if any) pasta sauce made without oil is currently recommended (salt content notwithstanding), and generally available in stores?

I dont know of one. The main issues are oil and salt and in regard to the salt, you have to figure that they are giving the numbers per serving which is usually 1/2 cup. I think most people consume much more pasta sauce than that.

I recommend people make their own. A 28 oz package of tomatoes (diced, chopped, strained, crushed, etc), plus some garlic, basic, and about 1/2 to 3/4 cup frozen or fresh chopped veggies (onions, peppers, carrots, shrooms, etc)

Make a large batch and freeze some.

In my area (suburb of Philadelphia, Pa.), I've seen two oil-free pasta sauces in grocery stores: Delallo (link: https://www.delallo.com/delallo-pomodor ... -25-25-oz/ ) and Vesper Bros. (link: https://www.vesperbrothersfoods.com/shop ). The Delallo is more common; the large Acme grocery chain carries them. I've seen the Vesper Bros. only in the stores of a local chain which is like a scaled-down version of Whole Foods Markets stores, and they were at least 50% more expensive than your typical pasta sauce in a grocery store.

In the first one, the salt is a 12:1 ratio, with 480 mg per 1/2 cup (40 calories). Trader Joe’s has a few no-oil too but their sodium is as bad.

If it was 2:1 or even 5:1 maybe but 12:1 is very high as 3 small servings puts you at the AI for the day not counting anything else. And, there is such an easy DIY option.

You can find three here that are salt, oil and "sugar" free (though they use dried fruit for sweetness) and are not cheap.

We never had Engine 2 Products up here in Canada, so don't miss what we can't get.

I don't use it as a pasta sauce, but I buy no salt added ground tomatoes in a can.

Ingredients: tomato pulp, citric acid

Per 1/2 cup

Calories 40

Fat 0 g

Fibre 4 g (that was a surprise to me)

Sugar 5 g

Sodium 10 mg

My sauce recipe is this

1 large can crushed tomatoes
1 medium can sauce
1 small 8 oz can of tomato paste
1 tablespoon vegetable seasoning

Simmer for 10 minutes

(Optional)
1 onion sauteed
I bet you could add a can of strained stewed tomatoes to add more bulk.

The recipe for fat free hummus in the McDougall app needs only slight adjustments to taste and consistency but at least you can prevent added fat getting into your diet.
