Docscience, I eat whole-wheat pita with nothing on it. Just have it toasted. Should be pretty healthy but I guess it's a trigger food for me. Like an alcoholic can not have just one shot, I can not eat breads in moderation. I will allow myself a bit more every day... ending up eating three pitas a day (extra ~500 calories). I'm staying away from breads altogether now but it's always on my mind since my family has it daily

geo wrote:Yes I still eat per MWL with tweaks per Jeff's principles/guidelines/recommendations. I eat ~1700-1800 Calories a day to maintain weight. I eat a large volume of food ~5lbs/day. which generally consists of about 3 lbs of starches and 2 lbs veggies/fruit.

How many calories are in three pounds of starch?

Do potatoes, rice, corn, peas, yams, oats, barley and whole wheat
all have similar or dissimilar calories per pound?

Depends on what starch you eat for instance:

A pound of baked potatoes is ~415 Calories
1 cup dry oatmeal (before cooking (2 servings) is about 300 Calories
A pound of Sweet Potatoes is ~410 calories
2 cups of cooked brown rice is ~ 500 calories

These are the primary starches I eat. You can see they range in the area of 300-500 Calories for what I consider an adequate, satiating amount of food (YMMV). I may eat about 1200-1400 calories of these starch based foods a day. Some days its a mixture of the above, some days it may be like 3 pounds of potatoes. It all depends on what I'm hungry for and whats available.

I eat very simply and cook very simply. If I can't cook something in 10 mins or so I don't even bother (see Jeff's SNAP meals). You can also look at my journal link in my sig to see what I ate everyday during the year of my experiment.

Sounds good, Geo, but why not beans? I thought they were supposed to be especially good for reversing heart disease.

All, low fat, plant based whole foods are good for reversing heart disease and every other chronic disease. Its never about one food. Beans are a great starch though tend to be higher in protein and calorie density than other plant based foods. They are limited in this program and definitely not a requirement.

But really, for me, I'm just neither a fan of beans (I dont care for their taste generally) and I also do try to restrict somewhat my protein intake as I have only a single kidney (I donated one to my sister due to her T1D) and I suffered from chronic kidney issues as well (which you can see from my numbers which showed tremendous improvements and normalization of kidney function).

Now I do eat beans on rare occasion and when I do, I prefer the most, frozen edemame lightly heated in a microwave, eaten plain. I also enjoy smashed up pinto beans as well and a good red lentil soup or chickpea hummus.

So for me, beans are a personal issue as well as one of taste.

For others, eat away as per the program
