Has anyone used a percussion massager?

Postby Thrasymachus » Wed Jan 08, 2020 8:27 pm

Recently I went to my local Dick's Sporting Goods(retail sporting Goods chain in the USA with many locations in the New Jersey region I live in) and I heard some jack hammer like noise in the fitness section. They had a display with two models of the Hypervolt, the vanilla version is just $300 and the Plus model is $400:

But that is a bit expensive and also they are way too loud, they are like almost vacuum cleaner loud. I want a model a bit cheaper and not nearly as loud. I found this Youtube of a more reasonably priced SAFR brand massage gun that is nowhere near as loud that it says retails for $180:
"Best Amazon Massage Gun: Update only $180 now!! Better than Theragun & Hypervolt!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCVFQJa4otE

But you can't find a SAFR on Amazon any longer. It seems they now sell under the Swyper brand for $192:

But it has very few Amazon reviews. I also notice that on Wish.com you find percussion massagers for like about $50-70, but I hear they can take very long to ship and it is dicey with wish.com you could get total crap or even scammed and received nothing.

Does anyone here have a massage gun? What do you think of it? From my brief try at DICK's it seems it could be a very worthwhile investment.

I have considered getting something like that myself, but decided against it. Here's why:

EVERY mechanical massage product I've bought throughout the years has been used once or twice, and then collected dust thereafter. I have ZERO reason to believe these products will be any different.

What I have found that is relatively cheap and works is to get a tennis ball, or even better, raquetball, and massage my shoulders with it against a wall.

I hate to be cynical, but I have just bought too many of these products in the past and ended up wasting cash.

Just a caution: Never buy from wish.com It is a well known Chinese scammer site. Especially avoid all electronics as they are almost always fakes, counterfeits, or very cheaply made. Youtube is full of videos of people having been scammed from wish.com. This is one site that truly deserves to be shutdown and put out of business.

I haven't used one. If you have tight muscles, I suggest reading Pain Free by Pete Egoscue. He focuses on correcting posture imbalances to alleviate joint pain, muscle tightness, etc. I have been practicing some of the exercises for the past 1.5 years and it has helped me tremendously with tight hips, sore knees and tight muscles. Yoga also helps.

So I finally bought one many months ago. At Dick's Sporting Goods I bought a Theragun G3 Premium:
https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/th ... ng3xxxxeac

It is listed at $350 but I think it was $400 when I bought it. Yeah, they overcharge a lot for what these devices are, but considering a massage costs like $100 for an hour where I live, I would recommend these devices to everyone. All the friends and family that have tried it love it.

Just yesterday I went for a bike ride and I noticed a bad knot in my left hamstring. I just finished working on it with the massage gun for like 4 minutes and it has already made a world or difference. For me it is worth it, because I hate foam rolling on the floor, this is more pleasant to use for me. The amount of relief you can get from chronic muscle tension and tightness and the quick work it does on knotted muscles make these devices worth it even though they upcharge like crazy.

I think the Timtam may be a better device and they have a more affordable $200 model but I think they only sell online and I really would want to test something in person first:
https://timtam.tech/collections/massagers

Or maybe the Compex Fixx is better and it is only $200:

I am not sure I would recommend the Theragun G3 I have as it is a bit a loud, there are quieter percussion massagers that you could even watch tv while using from some Youtube reviews I have seen. Eventually I will probably get a quieter model and gift my current one to my brother. I would say mine is as loud as maybe a food processor.
