On Protein

Postby JeffN » Tue May 09, 2023 6:49 am

Recently, I was the guest on a McDougall Graduates webinar. The main topic that came up was protein and there was basically 2 questions, which I will paraphrase..

1) I heard from experts that I needed more protein, especially as I get older, and wanted to know if this was true and the best way to do this.

2) I heard from experts that I needed less protein as it can be detrimental to bone and kidney health, especially as I get older, and wanted to know if this was true and the best way to do that.

:)

I read this article this morning and thought it was an excellent "up to date" recap on the issue of Protein.

"..it was in the quinoa." LOL

I want to print that article and hand it out to everyone who asks me "But where do you get your protein?"

I tell them it's in the food, but that doesn't seem to compute with them.

A few years ago I started noticing a trend of restaurant using "protein" as menu section, or even worse "add a protein from this list." Always a list of animal products, with maybe tofu.

There's still so much ignorance - and it is still killing people :(.

There was no reference to the body's ability to recycle amino acids. Isn't that a contributor to filling in the amino acid gaps when building new proteins?
I forum here cause I have no where else to go.

I believe it was mentioned in one (or both) but the main point of both is that a healthy WFPB diet contains more then enough protein and amino acids.

PS as an FYI.... it is thoroughly discussed in the IOM and NAS document on Protein and Amino Acids which is a must read and is on my list of recommended resources.

IOM NAS Paper

Realize however, that the calculation around how much protein you need is the recommended amount for dietary intake which is calculated as the needed amount after taking into account all the other issues (like protein recycling, the amino acid pool, etc).
