favorite starch

Postby gbrowne » Wed Oct 25, 2006 8:20 am

I love potatoes--I just found the Yukon Gold and have made it my new fave potato.

I like sweet potatoes, but I have problems getting them cooked all the way through by using the microwave. Someone in the Vegsource board mentioned cooking a pile of potatoes (any kind) in the crockpot overnight, but I haven't tried it yet. :lol:

I would never again eat another microwaved sweet potato. Please try cooking one in the oven. Oven baked sweet potatoes are heavenly and better tasting than almost anything on earth.

Here's how:

Bake a large pan of sweet potatoes at the same time on about 425F until easily pierced with a fork. This saves time and energy. Freeze for later use or store the sweet potatoes in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days.

My favorite starch is sweet potatoes, whether nuked, canned, baked, or as pie!

Next up would be Yukon Gold spuds. I've never done MWL, but have enjoyed many many satisfying MWL meals with potatoes as the base. Add a vegetable and a fruit and you're set!

cooking sweet potatoes

Postby Malva » Wed Oct 25, 2006 3:35 pm

I prefer cooking my sweet potatoes in a steamer, skins on.
Just wash before cooking.
You can either peel them after cooking, or just eat the skins.

Microwaves make them much too dry (and impossible for me to swallow).
I do a more restricted Program to maintain my weight & health. I have been McDougalling for about 30 years, with a long transition, until I finally accepted this lifestyle, stayed on Program and reached my goal back in 2006.

Definitely corn.

But I never met a potato I didn't like.

A few years ago I discovered spaghetti squash, which was delicious, but when I make it it never turns out as well as I'd like.

1) SWEET POTATOES!!
2) Winter Squash

3) Corn
4) Potatoes

I actually have to limit myself from eating too many sweet potatoes and winter squash before I go to my doctor; he always freaks out and orders liver tests, even though I tell him it's from what I eat.

Potatoes hands down. I could live off of them.

I'd have to say... potatoes, potatoes, and more potatoes!

Any kind... baked, steamed, or mashed.

Part of the reason I started on the McDougall journey was because I love starches of all kinds! I think this is my order of preference:

* sweet potatoes
* potatoes
* winter squash
* corn
* brown rice

I really don't think I could choose just one but if I had to it would probably be the sweet potato! :)
Have a great day!!

That's a tough one! I don't know that I could possibly choose. I LOVE STARCH, period!! I guess I'd have to say the potato, if I absolutely HAD to choose....LOL
