McDougall's bean burger recipe

Postby sashley06 » Fri Oct 20, 2006 12:00 pm

I was searching through the McDougall newsletter archives in hopes of finding the bean burger recipe. Unfortunately when I got to January of 2005, the newsletters were not available. I've seen this recipe before so I know it's in there. Does anyone have that recipe by chance?

Did you want the Tex-Mex Beanburgers?

If so, they're in the August 2006 issue of the newsletter. That's the only newsletter bean burger I can find, but in my recipe software I found a few, including this one. Hope it's kind of what you're looking for..

Beany Burgers

Recipe By :Bobbie Hinman
Serving Size : 8 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Burgers Lunch
McDougall Acceptable MWLP Acceptable
Sandwiches

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 cups cooked kidney beans -- or 1- 16 oz can, drained
2 cups cooked brown rice
2 tablespoons ketchup
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon dried sage
salt and pepper -- to taste
1/4 cup chopped onions -- finely chopped

1. In a large bowl, combine beans, rice, ketchup and spices. Mash with a
fork or potato masher until beans are mashed well. Rice will be lumpy.

2. Add chopped onions and mix well.

3. Divide mixture evenly and form into 8 burgers, 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
Wet your hands slightly to avoid sticking.

4. Spray a non-stick skillet with cooking spray. Preheat over medium heat.
Place burgers on griddle and cook until browned on both sides, turning
burgers several times. (Sue's note - an indoor grill like the Foreman
grill works well, too.)

5. Serve hot with your favorite toppings and condiments.

A similar recipe is the lentil burgers, which I adore. :)

Cook a cup of lentils.

In a separate pot cook a cup of brown rice.

Drain both really well.

Mash the lentils.

Mix lentils, rice, chopped onion and spices (I adapted the original recipe and use a bit of garlic and LOTS of cumin.)

Form into patties, bake at 350 degrees for thirty minutes.

Serve in pita pockets with your choice of catsup, slices of onion, tomato, etc, etc.

The recipe works best for me if I refrigerate the cooked mixture for a few hours. It can be made up the day before.

MMMMmmmmm! :D

Question about the beany burgers....would using a food processor to mix up the ingredients work? Would it get to mashed up? This sounds really delicious!
