Crohn’s Disease question

Postby PatriciaTEAMHUNTER » Thu Jun 17, 2021 5:33 pm

I have enrolled in the Forks Over Knives cooking course and am very committed to changing my entire family’s eating habits. Here is the challenge. I have an ileostomy and cannot eat much fibre or bulk. My son-in-law has Crohn’s Disease … and having been through many many specialists over the years - I recognize he is not getting the advice and support he needs. He was told to avoid peppers, garlic, onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, acidic fruits like citrus …. And cheese! That’s it! Is there any real evidence those fruits and vegetables are bad for people with Crohn’s? Those are delicious vegetables that add so much flavour to food! I also have a daughter and my mother - who have irratable bowels that tend towards extreme constipation. So I have to balance our diets - to slow down Brandon’s gut and keep Mom and Emma’s moving. Relying too heavily on ANY starch leads us to constipation - even if you drink litres and litres of water! (I had surgery for extremely low motility disorder … aka D.I.G.I.T.S.) … As a quick aside - I am very impressed with the Forks Over Knives program, its creators, and recognize the accuracy of the science on which the program is built. My family will be a wonderful example if I can get them all on point. My husband has Marfan’s Syndrome and just found out his cholesterol is high! While I eat very little meat, he eats plenty for both of us! That will change! Some of the other medical challenges faced by us, chronic daily migraine, insomnia, depression and anxiety. Having said that … my children have both chosen fields in health. My son studies Child Health and is now doing a course to be an Occupational Therapy Assistant. He has taken 2 university level nutrition courses and will take one more course in college. He recognizes we are repeating the problems .. because our food is determined by capitalism! My daughter studied Thanatology and will do one year of Psychotherapy so she can work with hospice patients and their families. I want them to be healthy and strong! To THRIVE! THank you for helping with that goal!

Dr McDougall general recommendations for IBD including Crohn’s Disease.
https://www.drmcdougall.com/articles/co ... is-severe/

Also search McDougall site for term “Crohn” for multiple success stories.
https://www.drmcdougall.com/?s=crohn

Suggest contact qualified whole food plant based professional for specific medical advice.
Availability of remote consultations is increasing.

There are a handful of plant based gastroenterologist specialists I have listened to on various podcasts.

Dr Bulsiewicz
Dr Sarina Pasricha
Dr Alan Desmond
Dr Garth Davis
Dr Angie Sadeghi
Dr Supriya Rao

You can also search those podcasts for guests who have successfully reversed their Crohn’s Disease.

And this article has very good scientific references.

Thank You Michael … I have been reading and studying so much - began with the Forks over Knives (and mostly eliminated animal products from my diet about 10 years ago) but did not require my family to do the same. My children - being at university and more aware of environmental and health impacts of animal foods - gave up milk (helped my daughter’s bowel immensely) and eat vegetarian 50-75% of the time. But they are still consuming some animal products and OILS/preservatives etc - from over processed foods. So I need to convince them .. slowly - that the food I prepare (and they eat) is as filling and delicious and nutritious without the pit falls - so please give up the animal products! Love Dr McDougall’s site - they have cultivated so much information and set it out so everyone can understand and easily navigate. And I will look into the routes you suggested for further guidance on Crohn’s … Funny - all the foods I make have the veggies and fruits I mentioned - but when my son-in-law eats them he does not have gut issues - only if you add those items to recipes that include MEAT (example spaghetti sauce with beef - I removed - used black beans and all the same veggies - tomatoes, onions, peppers, mushrooms, garlic) He has NO TROUBLE - so not sure its the veggies! But would like some confirmation from specialists - because as one of my children - I want him to be healthy and thrive! Again, appreciate you taking the time to answer a “Newbies” questions! Stay healthy and take care of yourself!
