STROKE - higher risk for vegan and veg

Postby Tommynz1975 » Sat Sep 07, 2019 4:01 am

was the song in the tv news advert tonight

This is the blurb and link from googles first hit
Please to weigh in and smack a few proverbial heads together. (a webinar maybe?)
Its hard enough to motivate and get the brain to change, change is stalled when media constantly plant these ideas

Vegans and vegetarians may have higher stroke risk. People who eat vegan and vegetarian diets have a lower risk of heart disease and a higher risk of stroke, a major study suggests. They had 10 fewer cases of heart disease and three more strokes per 1,000 people compared with the meat-eaters

same video but on YouTube instead of Facebook

I heard a rumor that Jeff Novick analysed this research study too. Does anyone know if this is true or have a link?

This is not a new issue, but one that has been around for a long time. Here are earlier posts on it

Worth noting: your chances of dying from heart disease are nearly 5x those of dying from a stroke.

In the U.S., heart disease is the #1 cause of death, with over 647K deaths a year.

By comparison, stroke is #5, with about 146K deaths/year.

These stats are for the U.S. in the year 2017, and they come from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention:

That is for total strokes.

The issue is hemorrhagic stroke, which is about 15% of strokes. It is less common but more serious as it has much lower survival rates.

YouTube says "... removed by user." I wonder why he took it down?

Any possibility that the higher vitamin K content, from the typically higher greens intake of plant based/vegans, has anything to do with the higher stroke numbers? Could these higher levels of vitamin K contribute to blood clots? That was my immediate thought when I first heard about this. Maybe some are overdoing it on their greens intake...more is not necessarily better. Thoughts?

No.

The issue is hemorrhagic stroke, which is about 15% of strokes and due to bleeding in the brain, not a clot. It is less common but more serious as it has much lower survival rates.

Thank you, Jeff. So, it appears to be related more to high blood pressure. I didn't realize that.
